Colville School was founded in 1891, a small, country school sited on the tidal shores of Colville Bay and in the shadow of Mt Moehau where the Commander of the Arawa canoe, Tamatekapua, is said to be buried. The school was known then as Cabbage Tree School. It was resited to its present location in 1924.
Today the School is comprised of two classrooms (Kahu and Kereru), a library / ICT space, a resource room (The Angel Room) which accommodates teacher resources and our “STEPS” Literacy programme, administration area with staffroom and toilets - all located around an enclosed central courtyard. There is also a community building where dance, drama, music, art as well as community workshops and youth group are frequently held. Beyond that at the seaward edge of the school grounds is a building owned by the Colville Early Learning Centre which has a Property Occupancy Document with the school.
Colville School is a lovely family school with 27 gorgeous children from Year 1 to Year 8. Most of the children come to school by bus from the northern beach communities and from small communities just south of Colville village. We are located in a picturesque rural setting adjacent to a historic mangrove estuary and opposite a native bush area that was once the meeting place of local Maori iwi. The children know it as Pa Korero. Colville School is currently working on trap lines up there to make the bush predator free in the hope that native Kaka will once again make it their home.
Classrooms at Colville School have recently been refurbished and a new roof has been installed on the old schoolroom. Our play court has been remarked and new adjustable basketball/netball goals have been installed.
Our school pool is brand new! We have been so fortunate to receive a grant from NZCT for $36,000. Now we have a beautiful new pool that is salt chlorinated and has the added benefit of magnesium. We have All About Pools in Auckland to thank. Mike (All About Pools) has been incredibly generous. A new filter and cleaning equipment, salt chlorinator, magnesium - as well as personal visits to connect us up and advice that has been ongoing. We are truly blessed. Our children and our community are benefiting hugely. No longer do our children experience stingy eyes or smelly togs. Thank you for your ongoing support.
We are always willing to discuss your child's learning and our school. Be sure to visit our Colville School Facebook page for recent events, photos and video updates.. We also have a Skool Loop App. Just download for free...search Colville School.
